The Hanover and District Hospital’s Garden of Fond Memories has won a Community in Blooms award.
The garden is the recipient of this year’s 2011 Green For Life Ontario Award.
The award recognizes community spirit, innovative ideas, and environmental sustainability.
Hospital Foundation Director Sue Patterson is not the least bit surprised by the award.
She says the Garden of Fond Memories is a tranquil little piece of paradise where patients, staff, and visitors can escape for a little while and just soak in beauty of the garden.
The 100 thousand dollar garden was a gift to the Hospital Foundation from Hanover resident Bill Roseborough in honour of his late wife Karen, who spent 38 years serving the hospital as a nurse.
He wanted to provide patients and their family members with a little oasis where they could go, reflect and recharge especially during difficult times.
The garden also serves as a fundraising vehicle for the Hospital Foundation, as it has the potential to raise 3.5 million dollars in future funds through memory donations.
Patterson says we can all take great pride in the 2011 Green for Life Ontario Award.
She says special thanks goes out to Bill Roseborough, Brydges Landscape Architecture Inc. and Ground Effects Landscapes.
Patterson says since the garden opened in June of 2010 many have fallen in love with the charm and beauty the garden offers.
