Two Rental property owners have been fined 10 thousand dollars, plus a victim surcharge for not having working smoke alarms in their homes.
In total, the two men have to pay 12 thousand dollars after pleading guilty in Blue Mountains Provincial Court to failing to maintain smoke alarms in operating condition.
Charges were laid after a complaint was filed that multiple smoke alarms were not working at the rental homes at 195 Tyrolean Lane.
One co-owner, George Vlastakis, was convicted on December 5th, of one count of failing to maintain smoke alarms in operating condition.
The co-accused, Tom Stavropoulos, appeared in provincial offences court on December 12th and pled guilty to the same offence.
They were each fined of five thousand dollars, and with court and victim surcharges, the total amount of the fines will exceed 12 thousand dollars.
The Blue Mountains Fire Prevention Officer, Duncan Rydall, says these convictions re-affirm the importance of working smoke alarms in homes and visitor accommodation in The Blue Mountains.
The Fire Service maintains that smoke alarms are the first line of defence in detecting a fire in the home.
