The Goderich and Area Disaster Relief Fund is benefiting from the kindness of strangers.
Committee Chair Duncan Jewell says their fundraising campaign ended December 1st and they exceeded their goal, bringing in 3.7 million dollars.
Jewell says 65 per cent of the total amount they raised came from outside of the Goderich area, with most of it coming from across Canada but also from the United States and overseas.
Jewell says they’re now starting work on the hard part, which is sifting through the applications and getting all the information they need from applicants.
He says there are huge gaps in the information because initially they just wanted tornado victims to make a claim, but now the committee will need in-depth information from insurance companies and contractors to work out how much money is needed.
Jewell says they received 372 applications and are working to get some of them completed by Christmas, but they’ve got a lot of work ahead.
You can still donate to the fund but Jewell notes that money may or may not be matched by the province.
A tornado hit the community last August, killing one person.
