Time has run out for the Owen Sound and Walkerton jails.
Despite the objections of local MPP’s, Mayors and OPSEU workers — the McGuinty government is shuttering the two facilities on Sunday.
Bruce Grey Owen Sound MPP Bill Walker, and Huron Bruce MPP Lisa Thompson both pressured the Liberals at Queens Park to rethink the plan but the Minister of Correction Services simply said “NO” to that idea.
The closures will have a big impact on both Walkerton and Owen Sound with roughly six million dollars taken out of the local economy thru lost jobs and spin-off employment.
Critics maintain the Liberal government has never revealed it’s numbers on how much money will be saved thru the jail closures in Walkerton and Owen Sound.
Mayor Deb Haswell tells us her frustration level has been rising over the past few months, because of the lack of communication on the issue from Premier Dalton McGuinty, or the Ministry involved.
Prisoners have been transferred out to other facilities and a handful of workers will remain on for a few weeks as the jails are decommissioned.
