The CAW wind turbine may be under construction in south Port Elgin but those against it are not going away.
About 300 people marched along the CAW road from the town work barns, temporarily closing Highway 21 in both directions.
At the turbine site, Saugeen Turbine Operation Policy (STOP) spokesperson Greg Schmalz says the fight is not over and STOP is prepared to take the turbine issue to the Supreme Court of Canada is necessary.
Schmalz, whose home is the closest to the 250-foot turbine, says in the past three weeks, they’ve already spent 30 thousand dollars on legal fees and will continue to fight the CAW.
One of the protestors was Joseph Leung who stated the Green Energy Act has divided communities and even families.
Huron Bruce MP Ben Lobb called on the CAW to step back and have open, honest discussions with the community at large before going forward with the turbine, echoing the comments of Huron Bruce MPP Lisa Thompson as well.
Some chilling news came from Deputy Mayor Luke Charbonneau who told the crowd the CAW issue is just the tip of the iceberg.
Charbonneau says he is led to understand that the town will be looking at 30 more industrial turbines in Saugeen Shores and like the CAW, each of those turbines will be located too close to people’s homes.
The CAW has already put in the forms for the turbine foundation and cement pouring should begin in a few days.
