Construction can begin on a new multi purpose recreation facility in Hanover.
After three years of hard work and planning the shovel has hit the ground and work will soon begin on the 10.5 million dollar Regional Recreation Complex.
Hanover has partnered with both the Federal and Provincial governments on the project through the Building Canada – Communities Component program.
The Federal and Provincial governments have pledged 3.5 million dollars each, with Hanover picking up the remaining 3.5 million dollars.
Mayor Kathi Maskell says the current 46 year old Coliseum has served its purpose and it’s now time to create some new memories in a more modern facility.
Energy and Infrastructure Minister George Smitherman was on hand to join in the festivities.
He credits Hanover for having the vision to take on such an ambitious project.
Smitherman says Hanover’s progressive nature gave the provincial and federal governments the confidence to partner with the town on the project.
The new multi purpose facility will feature an NHL sized ice surface, multi-purpose space, an indoor walking track, arena and heated spectator seating galleries. It will be accessible to all people.
Demolition of the old Coliseum will take place in June with construction on the new facility beginning in July.
The entire project should be complete by August of 2010.
