The United Way of Bruce Grey has handed out its Rotary Children’s Fund Grants.
This year, more than 21 thousand dollars will be handed out to various agencies that support children and youth projects.
The money was raised from the Rotary Club’s Winterama event and the Galaxy Cinema’s Starlight Film Festival and Community Day.
Since the United Way Rotary Children’s Fund was created in 2006 — the United Way has handed out more than 121 thousand dollars.

Through a partnership with area Rotary Clubs and the Winterama event held annually in February, the United Way is pleased to announce this years grants issued from the United Ways Rotary Children’s Fund.
Total Funds Requested $ 21 660..00
Total Funds Available $ 23 429.85
Financial support for the Fund came from Rotarys Winterama event, Galaxy Cinemas Starlight Film Festival and Community Day. The United Way has stipulated that any dollars raised by children and youth are allocated to this annual fund.
Since the United Way Rotary Childrens Fund was created in 2006, the United Way has given away just over $121 400 in additional funding to its agencies, supporting children and youth projects throughout the region.
Surplus funds will be utilized in 2012 as Winterama has chosen new recipient for their funds, creating a new challenge to raise the dollars moving forward.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Hanover & District $ 3000
In School Mentoring Program expenses – giving children in 10 schools the opportunity to experience different games, crafts,projects. It offers children in need of extra support a chance to spend one hour per week with a caring adult.
P.R.A.N.C.E $1510
To purchase photography equipment and a computer projector to improve the programming. Pictures will be taken of the riders and horses for memories. Videos will be sent onward to video competition allowing them to take part in a competition they would not otherwise be able to attend. The projector will be used during public relations events to promote programming
Grey Bruce Eat and Learn $1150
To put together Oatmeal Breakfast Kits – each kit costs $115.00 – would like to offer 10 schools the opportunity to get a kit. Each kit has 50 bowls, 50 spoons, slow cooker. If $ left, bags of oatmeal would be purchased.
Women’s House Serving Bruce & Grey $3 000
To hold a two day girl’s retreat, a girl’s conference to provide specialized one on one counseling for children experiencing mental health issues, resulting from witnessing woman abuse.
Canadian Mental Health Association – FAN Club $2 500
Annual Sunflower Fun Project- able to continue Sunflower Fun packages to 3,700 Grade 2 students in Grey-Bruce counties. They learn about good physical and mental health through activity sheets and colouring contest. Each are given a package of sunflower to us, reslulting in green thumbs, creativity and achievement seeds, and asked to plant and send a picture
Canadian Mental Health Association – Let’s Talk $1 500
Two visit in classroom presentation to high school students to help youth develop and maintain good mental health techniques, while decreasing the stigma surrounding mental illnesses and its treatment. Learn about the different mental illnesses and stories of hope and recovery. The funding would provide youth friendly and healthy snacks to encourage participation.
South Grey Bruce Youth Literacy Council $2 000
To build their collection of educational materials utilized in the Volunteer Tutoring Program. Hoping to purchase 10 Sony hand held digital recorders to enable learners to read into a recorder and play back to listen to themselves.
Durham and District Food Bank $3 000
Specialized equipment for children with Autism Spectrum Disorder – a weighted blanket (for proprioception needs) plasma car (for vestibular needs and motor planning skills) OR a touchscreen monitor with software for special needs students to access programmes and use a computer at school for learning and communication. Swimming lessons for a group with developmental challenges and Autism Spectrum Disorder. Specialized van rides to appropriate community events for a teenaged student in a wheelchair with fragile medical needs.
Bruce Children Are Special Foundation $1 000
To put towards Admission Prevention Funds which can be used to help clients struggling to provide basic needs for children. Examples include winter clothing and boots, up to date car seats and cribs, carbon monoxide detectors,medication and a bed to sleep in
Keystone Child, Youth and Family Services $3 000
To assist with increased ice time for Residential Program participants as well to update hockey equipment
