There appears to be no hope for keeping the Owen Sound and Walkerton jails open.
In the Ontario legislature on Wednesday — Bruce Grey Owen Sound MPP Bill Walker and Huron Bruce MPP Lisa Thompson called on the Correctional Services Minister to postpone the closure of the two local jails.
Minister of Community Safety and Correctional Services Madeleine Meilleur gave them a short answer — NO.
Meilleur criticized the local MPPs’ over the issue saying their leader, Tim Hudak, has been calling on the government to cut spending.
She says the government is committed to saving money and one way it is doing that is by closing in-efficient jails while building new facilities in Toronto and Windsor.
Walker also asked the minister to stop the closures and to consult with local stakeholders on the issue.
Minister Meilleur told the legislature the government is moving ahead with the planned closures of the 3 jails in Walkerton, Owen Sound and Sarnia.
