Bruce Power is exploring new options for building nuclear reactors out west.
A few months ago we told you how the company was going thru the environmental assessment process in Alberta with the possiblity of getting a new nuclear plant approved down the road.
Now, the President and CEO of Bruce Power, Duncan Hawthorne is working with the Premier of Saskatchewan on the possiblity of a nuclear build there.
It would be the first nuclear plant built in Saskatchewan and Bruce Power will be doing a feasibility study of potential sites and the need, over the next few months.
Hawthorne says both provinces are similar in that they rely on coal fired hydro generation… and those plants will be phased out in about 10 years time.
The head of Bruce Power says potentially, the two builds were be a big project to take on.
The good news he says … is that it would be some 8 years before a new nuclear reactor could be built and on-line … which gives the company time to recruit new personell .
Hawthorne says most of the workers needed for Alberta and Saskatchewan would be new Bruce Power workers, not transfers from Kincardine.
