The Owen Sound Salvation Army Food Bank isn’t sure when they’ll get the cheque — but when they do, it will give them just over 32 thousand dollars to take to the bank.
Spokesperson Alice Wannan says they spoke with representatives at Kraft Canada just a couple days after the contest started, and they were surprised at how many online signatures the food bank had already collected.
The online contest has Kraft giving one dollar for every online signature a food bank managed to collect, for a total of up to 50 thousand dollars spread amongst 30 food banks across the country.
Owen Sound collected just over 22 thousand signatures in seven days — something Wannan says Kraft officials were absolutely shocked to see.
The contest was intended to last until the end of January, so Wannan says she wouldn’t be surprised to see a cheque until then.
Wannan says the community deserves a big thank you for rallying so quickly behind this cause.
She says there have been so many job losses and shutdowns, that people here really look out for one another.
Wannan says the money they’ve won will help cover the gap they experienced during this past Thanksgiving’s food drive, when they fell 13 thousand pounds of food short.
