The Town of South Bruce Peninsula says there has been some tampering with Wiarton Willie’s groundhog enclosure.
They say in a statement posted to Facebook, “We’re disappointed that we have to address a concerning incident involving our cherished community mascot, Wiarton Willie. Someone sprayed spray foam insulation inside Willie’s enclosure, posing a risk to his health and safety.”
They explain, “This material can be harmful if ingested by our furry friend.”
Wiarton Willie is the Town’s famous groundhog who is the star of an annual spring prediction celebration every February 2nd, alongside other groundhogs, mainly in North America.
The Town statement continues, “Ensuring Wiarton Willie’s well-being is our top priority.”
They say Willie is carefully monitored by a veterinarian, and under their guidance, is provided a balanced diet for optimal health.
The Town says, “We kindly request that the public refrain from feeding Willie to maintain diet consistency and safety. Under no circumstances should foreign objects be placed in the enclosure.”
