Bruce Power says 2023 has been a year of progress for the energy company.
Taking a look at the past year, Bruce Power says a culmination of projects of years in the making, as well as new ones looking ahead, will help in expanding medical isotope production and assist in the global fight against cancer.
Among the projects undergone the past year, Bruce Power was able to bring its unit six back online safely ahead of schedule which will provide clean power for people across the province.
Additionally, the company continued to use its reactors to not only produce clean energy, but to also develop medical isotopes to be used around the world in the healthcare community.
“Bruce Power harvested a largest historical shipment of cobalt-60, used to sterilize billions of single-use medical devices and in targeted cancer treatment, and also was able to increase its capacity to provide cancer-fighting lutetium-177 through innovations to its isotope production system in 2023,” says Bruce Power.
In October, the company had notified the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission and the Impact Assessment Agency of Canada of its intent to launch an impact assessment for potential new nuclear generation at the site and the start of community engagement on the matter.
Recently in December, Bruce Power had also created the first carbon offset protocol for nuclear generation, a first for the industry.
Bruce Power President and CEO Mike Rencheck says as they look back on 2023, there is much to celebrate for those who work with the company and in the nuclear industry.
“Our people, our communities, and our partners have a lot to be proud of as we continue to support our community and provide clear, reliable electricity to the province and cancer-fighting medical isotopes to the global health-care community,” says Rencheck.
