John Butler was the winner of Saturday’s weigh-off at Pumpkinfest in Port Elgin.
The grower from St. Thomas entered a pumpkin that weighed 1596.5 lbs on the scale, about 86 lbs clear of the closest competitor.
Massive gourds, squash, fruits and vegetables were among the many sights and sounds at the 38th annual Pumpkinfest event, which was held Saturday and Sunday.
Beyond pumpkins, Saturday’s weigh-off featured several other competitions.
Joel Jarvis of St. Thomas had the heaviest squash (1283.5 lbs).
The biggest watermelon came from Bob and Elaine Mackenzie of Tiverton (157.5 lbs). Englehart’s Jeff Warner entered the heaviest field pumpkin (127 lbs). They also had the heaviest marrow, 124.5 lbs.
Warner also had the heaviest cabbage, 83.5 lbs and largest sunflower face (23.5 inches)
The longest gourd was 145 inches, that came from another St. Thomas grower Art Johnston. He also had the longest cornstalk, 248 inches.
Butler, the winner of the main event at Saturday’s weigh-off, also took the tomato (5.8 lbs) and sunflower competition (315 inches) competitions.
Port Elgin’s Doug Court weigh-in the heaviest bushel gourd, 199 lbs.
