The South Bruce Community Liaison Committee (CLC) is holding a virtual public meeting this week.
Coordinator Denny Scott says people who went on a delegation to visit a deep geological repository in Finland will be discussing what they learned at the site.
The meeting will be held on Aug. 3 at 7 p.m. via Zoom.
Scott says attendees of the Finland delegation will be given the opportunity to provide their reflections on the trip and speak on specific subjects they were assigned before they left.
“In regards to the phases of the Finnish project and how that compares to the phases of the Nuclear Waste Management Organization’s (NWMO) project, the facilities and community engagement,” says Scott.
South Bruce is one of two communities in Ontario under consideration by the NWMO for a DGR to store Canada’s spent nuclear fuel.
Scott says the trip to Finland was hosted by the NWMO to allow communities involved in the site selection process have a chance to see what could happen if the DGR project were to proceed.
In June, representatives from the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission and Impact Assessment Agency of Canada met with a South Bruce committee to talk about the NWMO’s proposed DGR project and the site selection ongoing between South Bruce and Ignace, Ont.
Currently the municipality is wrapping up various studies on the environment as well as working on a hosting agreement with the NWMO, should the municipality choose to host the DGR.
