Kincardine Municipal Council is expected to support a motion that would help secure a $1 Billion investment in a Strengthened Freshwater Action Plan.
The Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Cities Initiative is looking for support for the motion.
The $1B Freshwater Action Plan is a commitment from the federal government, and it would launch the Canada Water Agency.
The commitment was specifically made by the Liberal Party of Canada in the 2021 federal election to strengthen the Freshwater Action Plan with a historic investment of$ 1 billion over ten years to restore and protect large lakes and river systems starting with the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence River Basin.
According to the motion that will be put before council, the newly established Canada Water Agency is expected to play a role in accelerating the rollout of funding that would be made available through the Plan.
The motion outlines the municipality, being a member of the GLSLCI, supporting protecting source water, planning for climate change impacts, and ensuring shoreline resilience.
The Freshwater Action Plan has been working to prevent toxic and nuisance algae, and enhance the resilience of coastal wetlands.
The Great Lakes St. Lawrence Cities Initiative focuses on three things: advocating for policies, collaborating on issues of shared interest, and educating on solutions to common challenges.
