A blizzard warning has been issued for Grey Bruce ahead of the arrival of a major winter storm certain to disrupt holiday travel plans.
Environment Canada says the region will get hit with a “crippling blizzard” on Friday into Christmas Eve and travel will become dangerous and is not advised.
Forecasters say rain or snow will begin this afternoon and turn to showers for many areas tonight.
Friday morning, temperatures are expected to plummet and areas that receive rainfall could ice over in a flash freeze event.
Environment Canada says the rapidly falling temperatures will also be accompanied by strong winds and heavy snow.
“Blizzard conditions will develop Friday morning. Lake effect snow will result in variability of snowfall amounts through the weekend,” Environment Canada says in the warning. “Visibility will be suddenly reduced to near zero at times in heavy snow and blowing snow.”
Forecasters say tomorrow’s strong winds could include gusts of up to 100 kilometres an hour. As for the snow, it will start on Friday and continue on Christmas Eve and likely Christmas Day.
Snowfall amounts of 25 to 50 centimetres are possible by Sunday morning.
