Plans for a parade and demonstration against future wind turbine development have been blown away — by our weather.
Organized by the group STOP — Saugeen Turbine Operation Policy — and the Bruce county Chapter of the OFA, the parade was set to run right thru downtown Port Elgin on Saturday.
Organizer Greg Schmalz expected a big turnout, but says with a wind warning in effect — and gusts expected to hit 100 kilometres an hour — they decided to postpone the protest.
Schmalz says they had a lot of out of town people coming to the rally and parade — using tractors and hay wagons, so they decided to err on the side of caution and postponed the event.
No new date has been set for the parade and rally at the CAW centre in Port Elgin.
Organizers were planning on collecting signatures for a petition, backing a motion by Conservative MPP Lisa Thompson at Queens Park.
That motion which calls for a moratorium on industrial wind turbine development, is to be voted on March 8th.
The parade was to move thru downtown Port Elgin to the gates of the CAW Family Education Centre in Port Elgin.
The CAW is building a 76 metre high turbine in Port Elgin, despite objections from neighbours.
