Some Goderich homeowners aren’t too happy with their insurance companies and restoration services in the wake of last August’s tornado.
Town Councillor Kevin Morrison was also out of his home for four months after the storm — and has become the defacto spokesperson for some 22 families who are encountering difficulties with efforts to settle their claims.
He’s appeared on TV News to raise their concerns, and tells us the exposure has led to results.
Morrison says most firms have provided exemplary service.
He says problems can sometimes arise when an insurance company specifies the restoration firm to do the clean-up.
The Councillor has a number of examples were over-billing has occurred — and the money for repair then comes off the top of the insurance payout.
He says one couple was grossly overcharged for the restoration of clothing.
Morrison notes another family had to re-do the roof on their home three times this winter — and winter is not the season to repair a roof.
The Councillor notes he has yet to encounter any problems when the homeowner has been free to select the restoration firm on their own.
Morrison says a dissatisfied homeowner can go to the “General Insurance Ombuds Service” listed on the web, or call 1-877-225-0446.
