It appears a bank stopped a fraudster from taking money from an elderly woman in Wiarton.
The 77 year old woman called a phone number after she received a letter claiming she won 2.6 million dollars in a sweepstakes.
Bruce Peninsula OPP say the person on the other line was able to get enough personal and banking information to access the victim’s bank account and change the passwords.
But it appears the bank caught the problem in time and Police don’t think the woman lost any money.
In another case — Lambton OPP say an elderly Point Edward resident contacted them after being instructed by phone to send money to claim lottery winnings that didn’t exist.
The 83 year-old woman says she received a small cheque from the alleged scammer on the account of a Kitchener resident who was the victim of identity theft.
The OPP say the suspect then asked her to provide her personal information after an officer answered the phone and then hung up when police identified themselves.
The suspect then called back and provided information to police about himself and the company he worked for — which all turned out to be bogus.
Police again remind you never to give out banking information to anyone you do not know.
