Owen Sound Mayor Deb Haswell admits concerns have been raised about the methadone clinic in the Scenic City.
Haswell says complaints have come in about inappropriate behaviour downtown, and people wonder about the need for the facility.
Bayshore Broadcasting News told you yesterday about controversy surrounding the two doctors who founded the clinic.
Doctor Jeff Daiter and Doctor Michael Varenbut both have limits on their medical licences, preventing them from performing a certain procedure known as “ultra-rapid opiate detoxification”.
At the same time, the Ontario College of Physicians and Surgeons is planning a disciplinary hearing into allegations against Doctor Varenbut.
The allegations are quote “he is incompetent, he failed to maintain professional standards and he engaged in unprofessional conduct”.
Mayor Deb Haswell says the news about the doctors worries her.
She admits red flags have been raised about the clinic going from some 40 clients initially to reports of 400 people a day going to the methadone clinic.
Mayor Haswell says it appears to her to be a drive-thru operation with no one-on-one counselling or support services.
Haswell wonders about whether Owen Sound should even have a methadone clinic, but says she doesn’t have that answer.
