An Ontario teachers’ union is sounding the alarm over wireless internet in the classroom –something parents in our region have complained about for years.
The Ontario English Catholic Teacher’s Association says computers in all new schools should be hardwired.
The union adds no more classrooms should get Wi-Fi.
It points to concerns about wireless devices raised by the World Health Organization.
Some believe Wi-Fi poses a serious risk to people’s health and could case cancer.
The Huron Perth Catholic District School Board says there have been no reports of health problems associated with Wi-Fi in its schools.
Executive Director Martha Dutrizac says the health and safety of students and staff is uppermost — but they have made no decision to review the Wi Fi policy.
She points out that Wi-Fi is a fact of life in many businesses in Stratford and it’s accessible on trains and other public services.
She cautions the union paper only sets out its position and that it’s not OECTA policy to either ban Wi-Fi or to have it taken out of schools where it’s already installed.
