The two doctors behind the methadone clinic in downtown Owen Sound are being investigated by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario.
Doctor Jeff Daiter and Doctor Michael Varenbut both have limits on their licenses.
The probe began after a Woodbridge patient suddenly died in 2005, while undergoing “ultra-rapid opiate detoxification.”
The two doctors agreed last summer not to perform the nearly six-thousand dollar procedure again.
Over the years, the two doctors from Richmond Hill have created the country’s largest network of methadone clinics — known as Ontario Addiction Treatment Centres — including the Owen Sound and Barrie locations.
The College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario has harsh words for Doctor Varenbut.
In fact, a disciplinary hearing is planned for Doctor Varenbut on allegations that, quote, “he is incompetent, he failed to maintain professional standards of his profession and he engaged in unprofessional conduct”.
The College says this case against Doctor Varenbut is not related to the rapid drug withdrawal procedure but wouldn’t go into details.
But it is related to the care of 26 people in Doctor Varenbut’s clinic between the years of 2004 and 2006.
No date is set for that disciplinary hearing.
