2011 was a busy year for the Hanover Fire Department.
Firefighters responded to 103 calls — and there was one minor fire related injury — but the total losses from those fire calls were 123 thousand dollars.
The call volume is up from 2010 — but Fire Chief Ken Roseborough says size of the fires and the value of losses are considerably lower.
He credits the public for this — saying residents are doing a good job in their fire prevention efforts.
2011 was also a year in which the Hanover Fire Department placed a heavy focus on training — such as auto extrication, search and rescue and day to day operations.
Firefighters also brushed up ice water and confined space rescue training.
Roseborough adds the department was also able to connect with over one thousand people in their fire prevention and life safety activities last year.
Of the 103 fire calls last year — 76 per cent of them were in Hanover, while 12 per cent of the calls came from West Grey and Brockton.
19 per cent of the calls were for property fires or explosions while 29 per cent were false alarms — and the other calls were EMS assists and for vehicle rescues.
Roseborough says training and fire prevention will be key focuses in 2012.
