The Harper government has passed a motion to limit further debate on ending the long gun registry to three days — but it didn’t come without controversy.
Bruce Grey Owen Sound MP Larry Miller compared the registry to Hitler and the Nazis during his speech in the House of Commons on Tuesday.
Miller later withdrew his comments — but the Liberal Association in the Bruce Grey Owen Sound riding want the local Conservative MP to apologize for his remarks.
Still, Miller says they are one step closer to delivering gun control measures that work and do not target law-abiding Canadians.
The Opposition had introduced a number of amendments to Bill C-19 on Tuesday to try to delay the passing of the legislation.
However, that ended when the Tories passed the motion limiting further debate.
Bill C-19 eliminates the requirement for gun owners to register their long guns and other weapons that are not restricted or prohibited.
It also gets rid of all records.
The Harper government says abolition of the registry has been debated for years and it’s time to get on with it.
The final vote on ending the gun registry, will come next Monday or Tuesday.

Larry Miller stood up in the House of Commons today and drew a comparison between the gun registry and Adolf Hitler. The differences could not be more clear; one has led to a 65% reduction in homicides, the other was responsible for the systematic killing of six million Jewish men, women, and children.
Kimberley Love, Liberal Shadow Caucus member for Bruce Grey Owen Sound, responds to Miller’s speech: “I’m frankly astonished that Mr. Miller could make such an insensitive remark. It insults the survivors of the Holocaust, and trivializes the terrible suffering of the victims of Hitler’s policies. The gun registry – whatever its problems – was created to save the lives of Canadians.”
The Canadian gun registry was established after the massacre at cole Polytechnique in Montreal where 27 students were shot and 14 women were killed. The gun registry has been supported by the RCMP’s “Canadian Firearms Program Evaluation” and Bill Blair, President of the Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police (CACP).
“Mr. Miller’s comparison is reckless and irresponsible mostly because it diminishes the atrocity and horror of Hitler’s systematic elimination of an entire people. I’d like to make it clear that comments like this do not represent the constituents of Bruce Grey Owen Sound. I certainly hope that Mr. Miller issues an immediate apology for his remarks.
