A collision outside Shakespeare has claimed the lives of 11 people.
Ten people — believed to be migrant workers from Peru — were killed when a flatbed truck slammed broadside into a large passenger van early Monday evening in Hampstead.
The driver of the truck was also killed.
He has been identified as 38 year old Christopher Fulton of London, who was driving a truck for Speedy Transport.
Three other occupants of the van were injured and one was taken to Hamilton hospital with life threatening injuries, while the others are in hospital in Stratford with no word on their condition.
The impact of the crash sent the van across a lawn before smashing into the side of a house.
It’s the deadliest crash in Ontario since 1999 and some OPP officers on the scene said it was the worst they’ve ever seen in their entire careers.
Police say it’s a miracle anyone survived the crash.
The head of E-M-S for the region says five victims were already dead when fire officials arrived, and the others died as paramedics tried to help them.
Counselling is being made available for the emergency workers who were on scene.
