The Women’s House of Bruce and Grey is facing another year with financial challenges.
Community and Fund Development Coordinator Shannon Drainville says they are struggling to reach their fundraising goal of 144 thousand dollars.
Drainville says this money is needed to cover the cost of women and children who stay in their shelters longer than the Ministry funded six weeks.
Drainville says the public can help through financial donations.
But she notes you can also donate household items like pots and pans and support their fundraising events.
Drainville says many of these women flee with nothing but the clothes on their back.
Drainville is visiting municipalities throughout our region requesting municipal grant dollars.
She says the Women’s House is a vital service that local municipalities need to support and protect.
Drainville also points out that violence against women is not on the decline.
She says the Women’s House is always full and there is a waiting list for those trying to get into the program’s second stage housing.
Last year — the Women’s House assisted over 900 women and children, and staff answered over 14 hundred crisis calls and made over 670 safety plans.
