Progressive Conservative Leader Tim Hudak toured Owen Sound’s Georgian College campus on Thursday — touting his job crisis plan.
Hudak tells Bayshore Broadcasting News the plan to create 200 thousand more skilled trade jobs in four years involves changing the 1970’s apprenticeship system in Ontario.
Hudak says seven other provinces have gone to a journeymen to apprentice ratio of 1 to 1, and it’s about time Ontario did the same.
The PC leader is asking Ontario’s Colleges to coordinate apprenticeship agreements.
Hudak says Ontario is behind the times right now .
He says its ridiculous that some trades need up to five journeymen before they can take on an apprentice.
He says that ratio means employers can’t take on more apprentices.
The PC party estimates their plan would initially cost an extra 40 million dollars.
Hudak hopes Dalton McGuinty’s Liberals take up the plan, and if not he says they will when a new government is formed.
Hudak was in the region today with Bruce Grey Owen Sound MPP Bill Walker — stopping Thursday morning in Wiarton for Willie’s prediction and a stop at Meaford Hall.
