After 7 years — Hanover and Brockton are close to expanding their shared landfill site.
The technical report and the completion design for the Hanover Walkerton landfill site is now before the Ministry of Environment.
The documents were submitted on Monday.
The 32 thousand dollar application is the final step before Hanover and Brockton can expand the landfill.
Mayor Kathi Maskell says it’s exciting to finally get to this stage.
The expansion project is costing the two municipalities about 8 million dollars.
The Ministry is expected to give its response before July, and as soon as the approval is given — construction will begin immediately.
Councillor Peter Hambly says the actual construction will only take 4 to 5 months, so the site should be ready for operation in the Spring of 2013.
That would be just a few months before the current landfill runs out of space.
Based on current usage, the newly expanded landfill should serve Hanover and Walkerton residents for 30 years.
