The Chief of Police in Owen Sound is warning the public about a new designer drug known as bath salts.
Chief Bill Sornberger says it’s even worse than crystal meth.
Sornberger says his officers had a week from hell dealing with people strung out on the drug.
One officer was injured dealing with someone coming down from the drug.
Chief Sornberger says it was just bizarre behaviour.
Owen Sound Police were at a conference in the U-S when they were first told about the drug, and just two weeks later the drug arrived in the Scenic City.
So far Owen Sound is the only city in Ontario reporting the arrival of the synthetic stimulant — also known as MDPV.
Chief Sornberger says they are seeking out other police agencies to see how they are dealing with the drug.
There’s been two “bath salts” drug bust in the past two weeks in Owen Sound and 5 people hospitalized from using the designer drug.
Side effects include severe hallucinations, paranoia, violent behaviour, elevated heart rate, sweating, hypertension and suicidal thoughts.
Chief Sornberger says “frankly, it scares me.”
