The multi million dollar Deep Geological Repository project in Kincardine is taking a major step forward.
At Wednesday’s Council meeting — Mayor Larry Kraemer announced a Joint Review Panel has now been set up.
Kraemer notes the panel contains highly qualified experts in fields such as geology and chemistry.
The panel will assess the project and prepare a report and recommendation for the Federal Minister of Environment.
The proposed DGR project will hold low and intermediate level waste currently stored on the Bruce nuclear site in Tiverton, as well as waste from the nuclear generating stations at Bruce, Pickering and Darlington.
Kraemer says the panel will carefully examine the plan put forward by OPG, and review submissions from groups opposed to the project.
In the end, Kraemer hopes the DGR project will get the proper licensing it needs to move forward.
