Hanover Mayor Kathi Maskell hopes the province will address the town’s long term bed shortage crisis soon.
Maskell says they have been in close communication with the Ministry of Health and Long Term Care — and a new round of funding for beds will be announced soon.
Maskell tells Bayshore Broadcasting News the province is very aware of Hanover’s need for more beds.
The sale of the long term bed license is between two private companies — and therefore out of Hanover’s hands.
Under the proposal, 41 long term beds at the Hanover Care Centre would be transferred to the Elgin Abbey Nursing Home in Chesley.
No final decision has been made — but the idea of it sparked a outrage in the community when it was first announced last summer.
Maskell notes the town is also talking with a provider interested in bringing more long term beds to Hanover.
Maskell says they would need to replace the 41 beds leaving Hanover, plus add more beds for their aging population.
Hanover has a higher senior per capita population than both Grey County and Ontario.
