Restoration work on the Point Clark lighthouse will take much longer than expected, after crews found more cracking in the foundation that expected.
Parks Canada is restoring the lighthouse.
It has been closed to tourists since 2010 and was supposed to be re-open in the fall of 2011.
However, Huron Kinloss Mayor Mitch Twolan says damage to the top eight courses of masonry was much more extensive and will have to be completely rebuilt.
Twolan says scaffold surrounds the Point Clark lighthouse while the work is underway and he says the facility will remain closed this summer.
However, it is expected the Lighthouse will be safe and restored by this coming fall.
The Lighthouse is featured on a 150 year commemorative stamp by Canada post and has been a favourite with tourists in the Point Clark area.
