Bruce Peninsula OPP say some of their resources are being wasted.
The Bruce Peninsula OPP detachment has reviewed its stats from 2011 and say their officers responded to 260 false 9-1-1 hang up calls.
That means four per cent of the calls to Bruce Peninsula OPP were false 911 calls and officers wasted about 240 hours on those calls.
Constable Dave Meyer tells Bayshore Broadcasting News many of these calls were accidentally made.
He says they were pocket dials from cellphones in people’s pockets or from people cleaning their home phone and hitting a pre-programmed 9-1-1 button.
Bruce Peninsula OPP charged three people — two adults and one young offender — with criminal mischief for making false 9-1-1 reports.
Police urge you to save 9-1-1 calls only for emergencies.
And if you do dial the number accidentally — stay on the line and speak with the operator to explain what happened.
If you don’t — an officer will still try to locate you and determine if you’re safe.
