Don’t forget the arts — that comment from the Walkerton Victoria Jubilee Hall Committee.
The not for profit organization is requesting a five thousand dollar municipal grant as Brockton begins its budget deliberations.
That would match the grant from last year.
Committee Chair Mary Ramsay says the money will help offset the utility costs the Hall incurs every time it opens its doors to community and non profit groups.
She says it’s important Brockton Council is aware of the valuable service the Victoria Jubilee Hall plays in the community.
Not only is it a theatre and community meeting place — Ramsay notes it also hosts fundraisers, pageants, music festivals, even mental health forums.
Ramsay notes in 2011, over 56 hundred volunteer hours were logged in at the Victoria Jubilee Hall.
She says that kind of dedication from the public is a sure indication to Council about the valuable role the Victoria Jubilee Hall plays.
Mayor David Inglis agrees the Hall does in deed play a vital role in Brockton and says Council will do what it can to support it.
The 1897 building was saved from the wrecking ball in 1997.
It was entrusted to a group of volunteers who are to ensure the Hall plays an important role as a social, cultural and community meeting place.
