Safe N Sound in Owen Sound is still in operation, despite concerns late last year that the homeless facility would close due to a lack of funding.
Board Member John Stewart-Vanderburg tells Bayshore Broadcasting News that thanks to the generosity of a number of residents, and churches, the operation is fine into February.
Grey County provides two thousand dollars a month to Safe N Sound, which keeps the lights on, the heat on and allows the building to stay open.
Stewart-Vanderburg says on top of that funding, they need about 700 dollars a week for food and part time staff.
The County however, turned down a request last fall for 30 thousand dollars saying it was working on a comprehensive approach to homeless in Grey, with that report now due in 2013.
As a result, Stewart-Vanderburg says they are living week to week, hoping for enough donations to keep everything going.
He says members of the board are looking at fundraising ideas, including having a sign posted out front saying this week is sponsored by “_______” whatever business or individual who donates money.
When “The Space” drop-in centre opened 3.5 years ago it handled 20 people a day but that number is now 30 to 40 people a day.
Visitors to Safe N Sound can eat, shower and socialize.
