Water and sewer rates are on the rise in Brockton.
Over the next six years — Brockton’s water and sewer rates will increase each year by six per cent for the next six years.
That works out to a 45 dollar increase per year per average household.
By 2017 — the average household will be paying 270 dollars more a year for their water and sewer rates than they did in 2011.
Brockton Council blames the increases on new regulations from the Ministry of Environment.
They require municipalities to begin setting aside more funds for future water and sewer infrastructure repair and upgrade projects.
While the hikes may not be popular, Mayor David Inglis calls them necessary.
Council is worried the Ministry mandate may be the province’s way of preparing municipalities for leaner government infrastructure grant dollars in the years ahead.
