West Grey Council will have to consider an overhaul of the police station.
Mayor Kevin Eccles tells Bayshore Broadcasting News they’ve received a report from the police services board about an assessment done by the Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services.
He says the report indicates a few key issues with the police station.
The facility does not have a private room for an individual to call their lawyer, and the garage where they do light maintenance on the vehicles is the same entrance they use to bring in prisoners.
Eccles says there are some other problems such as office space and having the breathalyzer room double as the interview room.
Eccles says it’s unclear at this point whether they’ll need to look at expansion and upgrades, or if a whole new facility is in order.
But he says they won’t be able to look further into the issue until next year.
Eccles says they first have to focus on finishing and implementing the official plan for Durham and Neustadt.
Then after they’ve looked at the budget, he says they can start assessing municipal buildings such as the police station and fire hall.
