Brockton Councillors want to keep their convenient stores dry.
Council is voicing its opposition over an attempt by the Ontario Convenient Store Association o allow beer and wine to be sold in convenient stores.
Councillor Anne Louise Gibbons is concerned about the issue.
She says binge and underage drinking is a very serious problem in this region, and she doesn’t think it will be solved by making booze even more accessible.
Gibbons notes many young people work as convenient store clerks — and it could put them in an awkward position if they are pressured by underage friends to sell alcohol.
Brockton is supporting a motion against the idea from MADD Canada and the Centre for Mental Health Addiction.
Stats from the Grey Bruce Health Unit shows 25 per cent of local residents are considered ‘heavy drinkers’.
That is one and a half times higher than the rate in Ontario and Canada.
