Holy Family School in Hanover is the recipient of Metro’s Green Apple School Program Award and the school will receive one thousand dollars.
Promoting environmental awareness through the use of puppets — that is how Holy Family School will be use its one thousand dollar grant from Metro.
Grade eight teacher Marlene Lee is a professional puppet maker and will pass on her art to her students.
Each student will make their own two foot polyfoam puppet.
They will also be charged with the task of creating a personality for their puppet and developing an environmental public service announcement skit.
These PSA’s will be taped and later broadcast to the student population.
The topics can range from global warming and recycling to endangered species and conservation.
Lee says the puppet skits serve as a powerful tool for the younger students who often eagerly absorb and retain the message they provide.
Lee says the project will promote green thinking — but it also incorporates a strong literacy component through the writing of the skits.
Lee believes the program will help educate students about the importance of conservation and protecting the environment.
The Green Apple grant is sponsored by the Metro Grocery stores through money they collected through their plastic bag fees.
