The Owen Sound Salvation Army is reporting an overwhelming response from residents to the Red kettle campaign at Walmart in Owen Sound and Port Elgin.
It was dubbed the “Walmart Fill the Kettle Day.”
Walmart pledged to match dollar for dollar, all the donations to the Kettle campaign on Thursday.
And Salvation Army spokesperson Alice Wannan says the combined total was just over 15 thousand dollars.
That puts the Red Kettle campaign at over 70 thousand dollars — or about 97 hundred dollars short of the goal for this year.
Earlier this week, Wannan was concerned because they had only reached roughly 50 percent of the target — but now she is confident they’ll be close to the goal.
The money raised helps cover expenses for the food bank and other programs next year.
