There is a group in Owen Sound that will meet for the first time to discuss what it will take to restore the city band shell.
The band shell, across from the public library, has been closed off by city officials after being deemed unsafe.
But the city hasn’t made it a top priority to restore.
Francesca Dobbyn, the Executive Director of the United Way of Bruce-Grey, says a bunch of people have been chatting online in the “Owen Sound Facebook Network” group.
And tonight — Dobbyn says they will all meet at the United Way office in downtown Owen Sound face-to-face for the first time.
She says the band shell is a symbol in many ways of community, beauty, culture and heritage.
Dobbyn adds with the cutbacks in this economic climate, the group wants to find ways to keep such a symbol alive.
She says they will start the conversation tonight, and hope to find answers in terms of what will be needed, the cost, and what the community can offer in terms of support, materials, and volunteer hours.
Dobbyn is hopeful this project will be successful.
She says the people driving the conversation have been the same ones who were largely behind the push for the Owen Sound Salvation Army Food Bank in the Kraft Assists online contest.
Tonight’s meeting begins at 7 PM and Dobbyn invites anybody interested to attend.
