Residents in Hanover may want to think twice before they take that extra long hot shower in the morning.
As of the new year — it’s going to cost Hanover residents a little more every time they turn on the tap.
The town is increasing its water and sewer rates by 3.5 per cent in 2012 — that works out to an extra 22 dollars a year for the average water user.
Director of Corporate Services Christine Walker says it’s all part of a bigger plan to build up Hanover’s reserve funds for the water and waste water treatment plants.
Walker says the town has come up with a ten year forecast outlining the future costs of maintaining the plants.
Walker says this increase is better than hitting residents with a double digit percentage hike in three years.
Walker adds the increases will ensure Hanover will be able to sustain its water and wastewater system in the years to come.
Council has learned Hanover’s water system is in good shape after undergoing 3.6 million dollars in upgrades this year.
The town’s aging wastewater treatment plant however will be in need of some major capital dollars over the years to come.
Currently the water and wastewater reserve fund sits at about a million dollars.
