Local organizations will remember the Montreal Massacre at l’Ecole Polytechnique 22 years ago today.
December 6th is marked as the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women in Canada, to mark the anniversary of the day a gunmen killed 14 women because they were women.
Joachim Ostertag of the Men’s Program in Owen Sound says they will hold a candle-lighting vigil on Tuesday night.
He says 14 candles will be lit to honour the women, another candle for the women who are still victims of abuse, and one more for hope for an abuse-free future.
Statistics show that half of all Canadian women will experience abuse in her lifetime.
Ostertag says it’s important for there to be a Men’s Program to work toward a solution.
He says they work with men who are perpetrators of violence that want to change.
He says they help the men and the community understand why men sometimes feel they need to have power and control over women, and how to change those attitudes.
Tonight’s event is a collaborative effort with the Women’s House Serving Bruce and Grey, the United Way of Bruce-Grey, and the Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario.
The candle-lighting and memorial begins at 6:30 PM, and a free concert starts at 7 PM.
It is all being held at Division Street United Church in Owen Sound.
