There’s going to be a traffic disruption on Highway 21 and the CAW Road intersection in Port Elgin.
The Saugeen Turbine Operation Policy (STOP) spokesperson Greg Schmalz says a protest rally and march will be held starting at 10 AM on Saturday.
Schmalz says participants are asked to meet at the town yards behind Mable’s Restaurant.
Protestors are asked to bring their own signs.
The group is protesting the construction of a wind turbine in the CAW Family Education Centre parking lot, citing health and safety concerns of workers at the centre and nearby residents.
The turbine will be just a few hundred meters from residential homes, well under the 550 meters mandated under the Green Energy Act but because this request was applied for before the Act was law, it does not apply.
Schmalz says they will be marching west on the CAW Road to the first stone gate of the CAW where the turbine area is being prepared.
The protest on site will continue for a couple of hours before the march returns to the town yards.
Police will be closing Highway 21 in both directions at the beginning of the parade and at the end of the parade when it crosses the intersection of the highway and CAW Road.
Schmalz admits the construction is proceeding despite the STOP group’s lawyer’s legal request to cease.
He says the group wants to delay the project and have discussions about the health issues that may ensue if the turbine goes up.
Schmalz says there has been no contact with the CAW on the matter.
