As the shutdown of the Owen Sound jail looms — some of the remaining workers say they are being left in the dark about their future.
OPSEU President Paul Johnstone says several have requested transfers to other facilities, but the Ministry of Correctional Services isn’t giving them start dates.
Johnstone himself is headed to the Hamilton area, but although he says he’ll still be paid, he has no idea when to show up for work at the jail.
Meanwhile, inmates are being moved to the super jail in Penetang and staffing is being reduced at the Owen Sound jail.
The facility is due to close December. 4th, with decommissioning taking until sometime in February when the city would take over ownership.
Johnstone says he talked with NDP Leader Andrea Horwath and he holds out little or no hope that the shutdown can be stopped.
Bruce Grey Owen Sound MPP Bill Walker and Huron Bruce MPP Lisa Thompson both presented motions in the Ontario Legislature on Wednesday, calling on the Liberal government to re-assess the decision to close the Walkerton and Owen Sound jails.
But the Correctional Services Minister said No.
