The old saying is that politics makes strange bedfellows.
The Progressive Conservative opposition in the Legislature will find itself in the unusual position of working with the New Democrats when MPP’s get to work next week.
The first example of that co-operation comes with the pledge made by Tory leader Tim Hudak to support a New Democrat Private Member’s bill.
The proposal seeks to remove the provincial portion of the HST from home heating bills.
Recently-elected Huron-Bruce Conservative MPP Lisa Thompson says one of her party’s campaign pledges was to reduce energy costs.
Incumbent Progressive Conservative MPPs travelled across the province for months promoting removal of the provincial portion of the HST from Hydro bills.
Thompson says the PCs will continue to pursue that goal and hopes the New Democrats will support the move.
Thompson is encouraged by the fact that the PCs and New Democrats together hold a one seat edge over the governing Liberals in the House.
She believes it will lead to an unusual level of co-operation in which a number of key Opposition proposals will be seriously debated.
Thompson takes her seat for the first time along with Tory MPPs Bill Walker of Bruce-Grey-Owen Sound and Randy Pettapiece from Perth-Wellington.
