Owen Sound is going to be lit up tonight.
Not only does the power get switched on to begin the 24th annual Festival of Northern Lights on Friday night — it’s also midnight madness.
Opening Ceremonies of the festival begin at 5:45 PM at Queens Park and then winners of last years colouring contest will turn the lights on at 7 PM.
8th Street from 1st Avenue East to 1st Avenue West in Owen Sound will closed tonight for the kickoff to the Festival of Northern Lights.
Festival of Northern Lights Incorporated Board President Doug McKee says the they want to be part of the economic engine that drives the scenic city, not just pretty lights.
McKee says they have over 20 bus tours coming to see the festival this year — translating into about one thousand dinners being eaten in the city.
He also points to a recent study that indicated the festival has an economic spin-off of about 350 to 500 thousand dollars.
McKee also encourages festival goers to take in Owen Sound’s midnight madness tonight.
McKee says the more the people get in and support downtown merchants the more they can support the festival to make it bigger and better.
And the annual Kiwanis Santa Claus parade is being held Saturday — beginning at 10 AM.
