Two MPP’s are touring the jails in Owen Sound and Walkerton on a fact finding mission to help keep the jails open.
Huron Bruce Conservative MPP Lisa Thompson toured the Walkerton jail on Thursday.
So did Taras Natyshak — the New Democrat MPP who is the party’s Community Safety and Correctional Services Critic.
Both Thompson and Natyshak met with workers at the jails.
Natyshak says the NDP will be calling on the Liberal government at Queens Park to at least review the decision to close the jails.
He echoes the concerns raised by Owen Sound Mayor Deb Haswell, about the impact the closures will have on the two communities.
Natyshak also wants the McGuinty government to reveal the numbers it is using to show a cost savings by shutting the jails and transferring prisoners to Penetanguishene.
He plans to bring the issue up when the Ontario Legislature resumes sitting next week.
The new Ontario government will return the legislature on Monday, with the election of a speaker.
Question Period will return on Tuesday of next week.
The Liberals have set December 4th as the date to close the jail facilities.
