Despite the concerns expressed by area residents and Saugeen Shores council, plans for a wind turbine at the CAW Family Education Centre are going ahead.
Ken Lewenza — the National President of the Canadian Auto Workers union was in Port Elgin on Wednesday.
He talked to Bayshore Broadcasting News — and re-affirmed the building of the turbine, pretty well dashing hopes that the CAW might re-consider their plans.
The planned turbine has become a bone of contention for nearby residents who say — in some cases — the turbine will only be 150 meters from a residential home.
Under the Green Energy Act, any industrial turbine must be at least 550 meters from any given home.
However approval for this project came before the Green Energy rules were enacted.
Earlier this week, Saugeen Shores council agreed to contact the Ministry of Environment to see if a Certificate of Approval could be put on hold.
The town has issued a building permit to the CAW for the construction of the foundation to house a 250-foot turbine that will provide energy for the Family Education Centre.
About 30 residents are planning a protest near the planned site of the turbine near the soccer pitches of the CAW Centre at 8 AM on Friday.
