The auditorium area — overlooking the Wiarton and District Arena — is going to be re-opened when the ice is rented by minor hockey and figure skating clubs.
South Bruce Peninsula council passed a resolution on the matter but has some warnings for the affected groups.
Councillor Chris Thomas says the warm area was closed after excessive damage was caused by unknown persons.
In many cases — councillors believe it’s kids who get rough-housing and end up damaging walls while playing some shinny hockey in the room.
Thomas hopes residents who use the area — such as parents, minor hockey and its executive — will police the area since staff can’t do it all of the time.
Letters asking for cooperation will be sent by the municipality to the affected groups.
However, Councillor Jay Kirkland still questions the opening.
Kirkland says he has issues of what happens when the area is unsupervised.
He says renters of the room are responsible for damage but yet it’s the taxpayer who picks up the tab when the damage occurs by those who are not accountable.
